Summer Full Dome Laser Shows -- West Hartford July 9, 2009 to July 18, 2009 After a four-year absence the Travelers Science Dome is bringing back laser music shows for two weeks this summer. These concerts use a solid state projection system from Audio Visual Imagineering called Skylase that covers the planetarium dome with colorful swirling patterns and cartoon images that complement the recordings played by the original artists. Dinners on the Farm -- Pawcatuck, East Lyme, Madison, Glastonbury July 16, 2009 to September 12, 2009 Dinners at the Farm series, a project of River Tavern Restaurant in Chester, will visit four Connecticut farms to cook dinner with locally grown food. Dinners feature locally grown produce cooked on the back of a 1955 Ford F-600, flat-bed truck retrofitted into a portable mini-kitchen. Each meal is served on the grounds of a selected local farm, vineyard, or farmers market. Guests are seated under a great white tent to a long draped table. Menus are feature locally produced foods like scallops, heirloom tomatoes, naturally raised beef and pork, goat cheese and many others. The series donates $3,000 to each of its partners, Stanton-Davis Homestead, Connecticut Farmland Trust, CitySeed, and Working Lands Alliance.
Dinners are at Stanton-Davis Farm in Pawcatuck on July 16-18; White Gate in East Lyme on August 13-15; Barberry Hill Farm in Madison on August 27-29; Old Maids Farm South in Glastonbury on September 10, 11, 12. Etchings of the Eternal City: Piranesi’s Rome
Knights of Columbus Museum – New Haven Now through October 30, 2009 The exhibition examines several early prints of the 18th-century artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome). The etchings celebrate the diverse richness of imperial Rome in its architectural design. A draftsman by training and ambition, Piranesi hoped that his renderings of these popular ruins (the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo, the Piazza del Popolo, etc.), would inspire what he considered an unimaginative state of architecture in his time. Birds of the Outback – Mystic Now through September 13, 2009 An enclosed 1,200-square-foot aviary houses hundreds of colorful cockatiels, parakeets and rosellas, all native to Australia. Guests receive a millet seed stick for feeding the birds. Once inside the exhibit, where the birds sing and fly freely, simply hold the stick in the air and watch them swoop down to perch on your arm and eat right out of your hands. Guests will also learn about the birds’ habitat and behaviors, as well as the issues and challenges currently facing birds in the wild.
