The 2008 season marks the 26th anniversary of Eastern League Baseball in New Britain. The Rock Cats’ predecessor, the New Britain Red Sox, won the Eastern League Championship in their inaugural season (1983) at Beehive Field. A young pitcher named Roger Clemens hurled a 3-hit complete game shutout. In 1995, New Britain ended its long affiliation with the Boston Red Sox and signed a contract with the Minnesota Twins. Thus, the Rock Cats were born. In 1997, a young slugger named David Ortiz came through New Britain en route to the major leagues. In 1998, the Rock Cats had a roster which contained 17 future Major League stars. In 2001 the club celebrated an Eastern League Championship for the first time in 18 years. An unprecedented six Rock Cats players were promoted directly to the Minnesota Twins, skipping Triple-A altogether. In 2007, the Rock Cats unveiled a 25th anniversary team, which featured Roger Clemens, Curt Schilling, Joe Mauer, and Justin Morneau.
