Griswold Art Tour

The Griswold Inn is home to one of the finest private marine art collections in the country, with museum-quality paintings and artifacts displayed throughout the historic property. Originally built over generations by the Ladd/Lovell Family, the collection continues to grow under the stewardship of the Paul Family, who have cared for the Inn for more than 30 years.

Due to growing guest interest in the stories behind the artwork, The Griswold Inn introduced guided art tours led by co-owner and innkeeper Geoffrey Paul, whose passion and deep knowledge bring the collection vividly to life. Held seasonally and open to the public, these tours combine history, storytelling, and art in a uniquely engaging experience that has earned rave reviews from visitors and local historic groups alike.

Guests frequently praise the tours as informative, entertaining, and filled with fascinating historical insights — with many returning more than once. Additional public tours are planned for the fall, while private group tours paired with brunch, lunch, or dinner experiences are also available.

New Haven Museum: "It's Pronounced Ah-beetz" Exhibition Opening

The New Haven Museum (NHM) will open a new free-admission exhibit titled “Pronounced Ah-Beetz”, exploring the history, culture, and legacy of New Haven-style apizza.
The exhibit traces pizza’s origins from Italy’s working-class food to its rise in New Haven, highlighting the city’s “Big 3” iconic pizzerias — Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, Sally’s Apizza, and Modern Apizza — and how they became national favorites. It will also showcase other local pizzerias such as Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, portraying the deep ties between family, food, and community.
Co-curated by Jason Bischoff-Wurstle (NHM), and Gorman Bechard, Dean Falcone, and Colin M. Caplan — the team behind the documentary “Pizza, A Love Story” — the exhibit features:
  • Artifacts, oral histories, and memorabilia from local collections.
  • Video footage from the documentary.
  • Replicas of the “Big 3” pizzerias, complete with a realistic brick oven.
  • Short histories of Foxon Park Soda and locally served beers
The idea originated in 2009 during the making of the documentary, with Caplan recognized as the main historian of New Haven pizza. Recently, following a trip to Washington, D.C., where Representative Rosa DeLauro declared New Haven the “Pizza Capital of the U.S.”, the curators expanded the project with new materials.
The exhibit’s title, “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” reflects the authentic New Haven pronunciation of apizza (from Italian la pizza). It will be on display through October 2027.

Talk and Tarot Reading | The Torah in the Tarot with Stav Appel

Author Stav Appel presents a provocative thesis: that the early Tarot served as a secret tool for Jewish education during centuries of religious persecution. Examining the Jean Noblet Tarot, created in Paris around 1650, through a Jewish interpretive lens, Appel reveals what he believes are hidden Hebrew letters, Torah narratives, ritual objects, and Jewish holidays embedded within the cards’ imagery. This fascinating presentation invites us to reconsider the origins of the Tarot and explore the possibility that a hidden world of Jewish memory and symbolism can be found in its images. Come hear the argument, see the cards, and reach your own conclusion as to whether a secret Torah has been hiding undetected in an old deck of Tarot cards for nearly four hundred years. https://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/events/upcoming-public-programs/talk-and-tarot-reading-torah-tarot-stav-appel?utm_source=calendar&utm_medium=visitne&utm_campaign=talkandtarot

Metabolic Brain Retreat

What This Retreat Is About Your brain is the most metabolically demanding organ in your body. Comprising only about 2% of your body weight, it consumes more than 20% of your total daily energy. This retreat is not about memory tricks or supplements. It is about understanding the deep connection between how your metabolism works and how clearly, calmly, and vigorously your brain functions. One of the most striking discoveries in recent years is that brain health is intricately connected to metabolic health — conditions like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are not only linked to metabolic dysfunction, but also to mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. We now know that elevated blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, and impaired cerebral glucose metabolism are well-documented contributors to neuronal dysfunction — especially in Alzheimer's disease, which is sometimes referred to as "Type 3 diabetes."The good news? Food is one of the most powerful tools we have to change this. The Science Behind the Weekend Fuel and the Brain The brain mostly utilizes glucose, but it has evolved to exploit additional fuels — such as ketones — especially during fasting or periods of reduced carbohydrate intake. With aging, the brain can become less efficient at utilizing glucose, but brain cells can still utilize ketones efficiently, providing a rationale for metabolic dietary interventions. The Gut-Brain Connection The gut-brain axis is a complex bidirectional communication network between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. The gut microbiota — often called the "second brain" — influences the CNS through pathways such as neurotransmitter production and immune modulation, affecting mood, cognition, and emotional responses.

On Being Human: Mosaic Meditations by Cynthia Fisher

September 18 - December 20, 2026 in the Allie Kussin Main Gallery Opening Reception: Tuesday, October 6, 6 - 8 PM (RSVP appreciated) Mosaic Activity: during Free Family Day, Saturday, October 10, 2 - 4 PM (registration appreciated) Artist Talk: Wednesday, November 7, 3 - 4 PM (RSVP appreciated) Driven by curiosity and a background in Wildlife Biology, Cynthia Fisher has created varied and philosophical works that seek to elevate mosaics beyond the world of craft and into fine art. Through inspiring cultural conversations, Fisher aims to engage the viewer in questioning our impact on the natural world. Utilizing a wide range of materials, including vitreous glass and broken pottery, the tactile and textured nature of the medium forces us to share the space. Prompting questions about how we currently engage with the world around us and how it may engage with us. Through her works, she explores our environmental impact on our planet, addressing not only the greatness of human life, but our responsibility towards the natural world. “I do have reasons for hope: our clever brains, the resilience of nature, the indomitable human spirit, and above all, the commitment of young people when they’re empowered to take action.” - Jane Goodall Learn more at theUmbrellaArts.org/being-human The Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

Grade 8 social studies students in the Ridgefield Public Schools researched the lives of Dorcas and Phillis, two women enslaved by Captain Timothy Benedict during the mid-to-late 18th century. The project is being presented in partnership with the Ridgefield Public Schools, the Ridgefield Historical Society, The Witness Stones Project, The Meeting House and Ridgefield Congregational Church. The Witness Stones Installation Ceremony is an invitation-only event, but everyone is invited to watch the program live online. Register to receive the link to watch the ceremony live.

In our final “Salem as Muse” talk of 2026, join Karina Corrigan, Deputy Chief Curator and the H. A. Crosby Forbes Curator of Asian Export Art, for a discussion of PEM’s Salem Stories exhibition. This exhibition presents an A-Z array of 26 vignettes about the people, places and events that make Salem the city it is today. Starting with “A is for Always Indigenous,” the first vignette honors the Native communities who have lived for millennia on the land where the museum now sits. Ending with “Z is for Zoology,” the exhibition highlights a longtime collection favorite: a huge leatherback turtle specimen dating from 1885. Hornbills, Macaws and Birds of Paradise: Filming Birds for Science and Conservation

Over the past ten years, Tim Laman has aimed his camera at charismatic bird species, trying to tell their stories to raise conservation awareness. In partnership with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Netflix and the BBC, Laman has made films about critically endangered Helmeted Hornbills, Birds-of-Paradise and Scarlet Macaws and the people trying to save them from chick poachers. In this presentation, he will share the stories of these projects and discuss the potential impacts of different styles of natural history films, as well as the potential for scientific discovery during filming projects. The hope is that by telling the stories of these charismatic species we can make an impact for conservation, not only for the birds, but also for their forest habitats and all their other inhabitants. After concluding a successful summer concert season with seven concert band performances conducted throughout the greater Portland area, the Maine Pops returned to fall rehearsals on September 9 with a two-hour session at Scarborough High School. Under the direction of David Watts – now starting his tenth season as the band’s conductor – the Maine Pops plans to perform a variety of holiday pieces to prepare the audience for the holidays. Cost of admission for the fall concert is a $15 donation per person, payable at the door. Students attending are admitted free. As of September 9, over 110 musicians have joined or renewed their commitment to the Maine Pops – one of the largest community bands in the state. Although membership is open to community musicians in Southern Maine and nearby New Hampshire, the Maine Pops is currently limiting recruitment to specific instrumental needs. Local musicians who are interested in joining the Maine Pops should first contact Barbara Wolejko – the band’s personnel manager - at [email protected]. For more information on the band, please inquiries to [email protected] or [email protected].

Will Evans

18+, Positive I.D. Required Will Evans creates music as an open invitation—to drop your guard, tune in, and move through the world a little more freely. Rooted in folk tradition yet unconfined by genre, his songs blend thoughtful, quotable lyrics with sunlit grooves and global textures, encouraging listeners to reconnect with their most honest selves. Based in Rhode Island, the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has built a devoted following by pairing sound with intention, most notably through his Kind Folk community, which turns shows into shared experiences of kindness, charity, and collective uplift. Known for his dynamic live performances, Evans weaves together acoustic guitar, handpan, didgeridoo, beatboxing, and percussion to create a fluid, organic sound that feels both grounded and expansive. His 2025 release The Wild Unknown pushes that vision further, exploring the crossroads of contemporary folk, electronica, and rock, with collaborations from artists like Tristan Prettyman, Dirtwire, and Moontricks. From sold-out rooms across the U.S. and Europe to stages shared with Crosby & Nash, Grace Potter, Bruce Hornsby,Dirtwire, Trevor Hall, and Railroad Earth, Will Evans continues to build a musical space where connection comes first—and everyone belongs. Steve Rondo has built a following across the Northeast, touring beach towns, dive bars, and regional festivals. Songs like Flowers of La Jolla and Afternoon Rebellion showcase his blend of heartfelt storytelling and guitar-driven arrangements — music made for long drives and reflection. A surfer at heart, Rondo brings coastal atmosphere into his songwriting. His songs mirror the ocean’s push and pull — building into anthemic choruses before settling into calm. Themes of freedom, uncertainty, and searching for direction run throughout his work, capturing the feeling of chasing waves and dreams. Live, Rondo and his band balance raw emotion with communal energy. Highlights include opening for Dermot Kennedy in Portland, Maine in 2022, plus performances at Levitate Music Festival and 92.5 The River’s Riverfest, cementing their reputation as a rising live act in the region.

Bess Atwell

Sometimes we have to leave what we know behind in order to find ourselves. For British artist Bess Atwell, a spontaneous move to Canada, where she lived for nine months, proved the catalyst for one of her most vividly realised, honest albums to date. Cut a Figure, her fourth record, doesn’t just trace the outlines; it digs deep as Atwell analyzes a lifetime’s worth of relationships, decisions, and motivations. To make such an album, she had to abandon some of the creative processes that had become second nature. “The songs I really enjoyed performing from my last record were the rare moments where I put down any instruments, and it was just me singing to my audience, which can be a bit scary,” she says, referring to 2024’s Aaron Dessner-produced Light Sleeper. “But those were the songs that seemed to connect the most, and where I felt most free to actually live with the song and what it was about.” She reclaims it all on "Tonight I Am Allowed," enveloped by looping textures of piano, analogue synths, and shimmering drum patterns. “I’m tired of acting,” she sings, “Like it’s gone wrong when maybe/ This is just how they made me/ And I become what I was.” Atwell’s voice is as beautiful as ever, but there’s a palpable defiance in the way she sings here, as though she’s physically pushing back against the masks society has forced her to wear for most of her life: “This is just the way I am.” It’s a powerful phrase, and one that echoes throughout this extraordinary record.
