The 1,013-acre Barn Island Wildlife Management Area is the State's single largest coastal property managed for wildlife conservation. The origins of Early American History began in Old Mystic. The Inn dates back to early 1784 and still provides the feel of the era thanks to the careful preservation and restoration. The main inn once housed the Old Mystic Book Shop filled with Antique books and maps, and then was restored into the inn with its rooms named for New England Authors. The main inn is well-appointed with detail and decorated with Antiques and reproduction furnishings all queen sized beds and private baths. In 1988 the carriage house was built to accommodate four more guestrooms with queen sized pencil post canopy beds, private baths and two rooms with whirlpool tubs. The grounds feature a gazebo, perennial flower beds, stonewalls and large oaks and maples complete this peaceful setting. The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, founded in 1964 and based in Waterford CT, is dedicated to the advancement of new work for the theater and creates and operates programs which complement that goal. These include the Puppetry Conference, Playwrights Conference, Critics Institute, Music Theater Conference and the National Theater Institute, a college-accredited training program for theater artists.
